Underwriter - Commercial

Purpose of the role

We are seeking a confident and engaging Underwriter/Insurance professional to join our Commercial team. You will be responsible for managing our SME platform, underwriting cases within agreed processes and risk appetite, to achieve business development and retention targets. You will play a pivotal role within our business, assisting with the performance and success of our Commercial team and our SME proposition.

You will spend the majority of your time working with our brokers identifying, discussing and converting new and existing business opportunities and making effective underwriting decisions. You will apply a range of underwriting, relationship management and business development techniques to retain existing and win new business opportunities, within our defined risk appetite. You will have a passion for service delivery, great customer relationship skills and be a good communicator and team player.

You will assist in maintaining and developing an underwriting/client portfolio, managing how we are tracking against key performance indicators and supporting colleagues in the wider team as required.

Skills & experience required

Ideally you will have underwriting experience/industry experience and possess CII qualifications. Experience of working with insurance brokers across a range of insurance products would be beneficial. You will be self-motivated, organised, be able to work under own initiative to deadlines and committed to providing excellent customer service with close attention to detail and accuracy.

UNDERWRITING OFFICER – JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILIITES

The overall objective of the Underwriting Officer is to ensure that the ARM Underwriting Committee (“the Committee”) fulfils the requirements of its Terms of Reference and to report directly to the ARM Board in this regard.

Key Tasks

• To chair the meetings of the Committee
• To ensure that the (re)insurance programs of the relevant entities under management are reviewed and signed off by the Committee.
• To coordinate the meeting of the Committee as required, and ensuring meetings are fully documented.
• To coordinate the review of (re)insurance policy wordings as required.
• To assist with the review and drafting of (re)insurance documentation.
• To report to the ARM board detailing the Committee’s activities e.g. number of policies reviewed and policies outstanding.
• To ensure that each client/program is provided with a formal Committee sign off
• To liaise with the Account Executive and CSD on client programs if appropriate

Specific tasks

• Regular review of Committee templates (Underwriting Process Review Forms ‘UPRFs’ and Structure, Premium, Incidents, Last Review and Terms ‘SPLIT’ Forms) to ensure they remain fit for purpose.
• To coordinate the review and consideration by the Committee of New Business proposals.
• To maintain a schedule of Key Performance Indicators (‘KPIs’) and report to the ARM Board the extent to which these are met.
• To undertake any underwriting or insurance-based training for the office, on an ad hoc basis, as applicable.
• To provide specialist assistance and advice where necessary.
• To assist with completion of Committee action points, raised at UWC reviews, where applicable

Qualifications

• Minimum of ACII Diploma (Dip. CII)
• GCSE mathematics
• 3 years’ experience within an insurance role in a regulated financial services environment

ROLE OF ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

GENERAL

• Responsibility for the management of a portfolio of captive and commercial (Re)insurance companies and accounts within a segregated accounts company.
• Responsibility for producing accurate accounting, underwriting and company secretarial information on a timely basis to enable the client Boards and controllers to make informed decisions.
• Liaising with the parent company, insurance regulator, directors, service providers etc in respect of the above.
• Advising senior management of issues of significance in respect of the above.

SPECIFIC

INSURANCE

• Policy administration and documentation
• Claims administration including reporting and recording
• Liaison with insurance and reinsurance brokers as required
• Underwriting decisions in conjunction with Directors, renewals and new business
• Checking the risk gap
• GFSC approvals of changes to business plans
• Obtaining Board approval
• Checking insurance documentation
• Accounting for premiums
• Agreeing reserving methodology

FINANCIAL

• Production of management accounts, statutory accounts and information, budgets, cashflow statements, and supplementary information as required.
• Assisting with the adoption of appropriate accounting practices and ensuring adherence thereto.
• Monitoring margins of solvency

Live Accounting

• Monthly bank reconciliations
• Monthly posting of bank investment transactions
• Monthly posting of monthly bordereaux

Cash

• Managing day to day cash requirements of companies
• Liaising with banks
• Liaising with and monitoring investment managers in respect of client invested funds.

COMPANY SECRETARIAL

• Performing relevant company secretarial functions including occasionally taking and producing minutes of meetings and required statutory filings.
• Ensuring minutes produced and circulated within seven days of meeting.
• Produce action points immediately after minutes are produced and add to “To Do Lists”
• Actioning matters arising.
• Arranging AGM
• Maintaining Corporate Governance framework and procedures manual   
• Scheduling of Key Actions

  • Tax returns
  • GFSC Annual return

Board Meetings

• Co-ordination of board meetings. Producing board pack to agreed standards and timing (7 days prior to meeting). Attending meetings and leading discussions as necessary
• Entertaining clients as required

• • Checking client travel arrangements
  • Booking Boardroom
  • Overnight arrangements (Dinner, taxis, hotels etc)
  • In-house lunch or book restaurant.

• Maintaining contact with local directors and keeping them advised of developments with client.

TRAINING

• Undertaking appropriate and relevant training and development
• Assisting with training of colleagues where relevant.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintaining an ongoing relationship with the client.
• Visiting the client at least annually
• Socialising with client wherever appropriate
• Understanding the client's business and industry.
